A Little Bit About Brazil

RReaganDoralHS

On March 17, 2015, at 9:00 am, Brazilian Voices had the privilege of presenting its Culture and Education Program “A Little Bit About Brazil” at the Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School. The program, which is a compact version of the acclaimed “From Brazil to the World”, has already been presented with great success in small venues, such as other schools and museums.

Students from Mrs. Beatriz Cariello’s Portuguese class were among the selected group of 500 who attended the performance at the school auditorium. The audience embarked with great enthusiasm on the interactive journey through Brazilian rhythms, music and culture. Participants learned basic facts about Brazilian culture while being exposed to a variety of styles such as Forró, Baião, Brazilian jazz or Bossa Nova, Samba, and Rock. The students joined Brazilian Voices by singing a widely recognized song and by performing a “batucada de boca”, a vocal percussion samba experiment.

Rhythm

May 10, 2014 – Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale

Once again Brazilian Voices energized the Amaturo Theater at Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts on the eve of Mother’s day with another delightful concert. Rhythm was charged with music, dance, and humor.
This sold out concert took place a few days after Brazilian Voices received its 10th International Press Award for Best Brazilian Musical Group in the United States.
Choreographer, actor, and dancer Pablo Malco opened the show with a captivating solo performance, inviting the audience to reflect upon rhythm. Although the selected repertoire had a rich mix of different Afro-Brazilian music, “the concert was truly inspired by the broad concept of rhythm, from biological frequencies such as heartbeat and breathing patterns, to music, dance, rhythms of nature and urban life, and beyond the definition of musical genres and beats”, according to Sue Scaglione, the concert’s artistic director.
Thirty singers from the all-female vocal group, some performing for their first time, were joined by the vibrant band, conducted by Maestro Jorge L. Sosa, along with the percussionists from Samba RJ.
The concert featured performances by Fábio Barros and dancers from Cia do Axé, who delivered impeccable choreographies, including an energetic Maracatú. Capoeira performers led by Professor Pica-Pau and Berimbau players from the LuandAngola center were also among the guest artists.
This energy-packed, one-of-a-kind concert captivated the audience with exhilarating Brazilian music by Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Daniela Mercury, Maria Gandú, Lenine, Milton Nascimento, Marisa Monte, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, among others. The program had a unique rendition of Alicia Key’s hit of Girl on Fire complemented by a solo dance performance by Andréa Araújo that educed a standing ovation.
