Jazz Across Cultures – Brazilian Voices Concert

The Jazz Age was a cultural phenomenon that originated in the US, but soon made its way across the world.

Brazilian Voices portrayed how jazz influenced Bossa Nova, or Brazilian Jazz, and how this genre made its way back to the US. 

This sold out concert was performed at the Broward Center for the Performing on May 24, 2019 and celebrated Ella Fitzgerald among other artists.

Special Guests: Jorge Sosa (Keyboard), Augustin Conti (Bass), Pill Fest (Guitar), Goetz Kujack (Drums) and Melo Groove Steel Orchestra.

Brazilian Voices @ Weston World Fest

Brazilian Voices was honored to join the fourth annual Weston World Fest which celebrates international culture, cuisine and entertainment.
This year’s Fest featured a theme of “Stage & Screen”, highlighting movies, music, theater and performances from around the world. Visit booths representing 20 different countries, with a passport challenge for students. Area restaurants sold authentic international cuisine, while onstage a variety of award-winning international live performances by artists, dancers, singers and musicians, including Brazilian Voices, brought the theme of Stage & Screen to life. Winner of Best Cultural Event 2016 and 2018.

Brazilian Voices was happy to perform and share music and culture during this amazing, relaxed and free performance at Weston Regional Park.

Brazilian Voices Jazz & Samba

For this beautiful concert, Beatriz Malnic and Loren Oliveira, Brazilian Voices’ artistic directors, have chosen works that highlight the group’s strengths, and feature their fluidity and warmth through singing. The program demonstrated the group’s powerful interpretation, rich harmonies and passionate approach to Brazilian jazz and samba, while also including joyful music performed by wonderful international musicians.

“Amazonas” – A Brazilian Voices Concert

Award-winning vocal group Brazilian Voices presented “Amazonas” – a musical tribute to the rain forest. The audience njoyed the fluidity, warmth, and passion that are trademarks of the group’s rich sound.

Original vocal arrangements by Beatriz Malnic gave a special flavor to celebrated brazilian songs.

Terra Brasilis: From Choro to Jazz

Brazilian Music Institute Workshop.

The University of Florida’s (UF) Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) gathered outstanding Brazilian musicians for an intensive week of instruction May 14-19, 2018. This year’s BMI, took place at the New World School of the Arts – Music, and provided unique opportunities for singers, guitarists, percussionists, drummers, pianists and other instrumentalists to study with exceptional musicians such as: Welson Tremura, Larry Crook, Vadim Arsky, Beatriz Malnic, Nestor Torres, Hercules Gomes, Tabajara Belo, James Gasior, Aaron Colverson and the Brazilian Voices. BMI featured daily rehearsals and group lessons in Brazilian instrumental music as well as a concluding concert on Saturday, May 19 entitled Terra Brasilis: from Choro to Jazz, featuring the guest artists and selected BMI participants.

The event took place on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the New World School of the Arts – Music, Wolfson Campus Auditorium, Miami, Fl.

Brazilian Voices Concert: Colors of April.

Celebrating Women & Spring with their rich harmonies, powerful interpretations, and passionate approach, Brazilian Voices performed hits by Marisa Monte, João Gilberto and Carmem Miranda. 

This concert took place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on April 27, 2018. It counted with the fabulous performance of Nestor Torres as a special guest.

The Brazilian Voices Concert Cabaret was a high energy fundraising event that took place on December 1, 2017, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The sold out show presented powerful interpretations and original vocal arrangements of popular Brazilian songs, ranging from high energy rhythm of Sambas and Choros, to smooth and melodic Bossa-Nova tunes. The highlight of the evening was the impeccable and extraordinary performance by Latin Grammy Award winner flutist Nestor Torres. His renditions of “Brasileirinho” and classical Brazilian Jazz captivated the audience in an interactive cabaret style.

Brazilian Voices presented its short documentary and performed two songs at the 21st Brazilian Film Festival at Regal South Beach in Miami on September 23, 2017. The group was accompanied by Brazilian guitar player Ivo de Carvalho during the opening for the screening of the movie “ELIS”.

BMI featured daily rehearsals and group lessons in Brazilian instrumental music as well as a concluding concert on Friday, May 26, 2017 in Bailey Hall (Davie) entitled Terra Brazil meets Jazz featuring the guest artists and selected BMI participants.

Brazilian Voices Concert – Samba Carousel was filled with energy, beauty and exciting fun-filled engagement with audience!
An energy-packed performance that captivated audiences with Brazilian music and dance, with songs that included selections of Brazilian Jazz and Samba favorites. This performance was accompanied by international artists at the Pompano City Center Carousel area, an open public area.
Recreating the atmosphere of the Rio carnival here in South Florida, Brazilian Voices exuberantly celebrated Mardi Gras for diverse audiences who enthusiastically sang and danced along. Among favorite moments were the display of extraordinary authentic costumes from Brazilian Beat and the Samba steps lesson by Fabio Barros.

Bossa Nova

South Florida-based Brazilian Voices is a women’s’ vocal ensemble noted for its musical excellence in Jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba and Pop. Over 14 years, the ten-time winner of the Brazilian International Press Award for Outstanding Brazilian Musical Group, Brazilian Voices has released 7 CDs and performed around the world in Barcelona, Madrid, Mexico, New York and London.

Serene, innovative renditions of such Bossa Nova classics as Jobim’s “Wave,” and “Dindi” lent further charm to an evening that proved that some popular music never grows old. The group performed standards, adding elements with a smooth, cool remix and catchy original vocal arrangements.

Brazilian Voices was delighted with the response to last night’s two sets at
the Arts Garage in Delray.

The multinational audience went crazy for the fusion of Jazz and Samba, which refined both genres and broke new ground.

Yuri Hawakawa of New York, said, “I felt like I was on a beach in Rio sipping a Caipirinha and listening to great music…”

The audience reacted with cheers, dancing and participating…often singing along.

The repertoire was the perfect balance of new and old material, with relaxing lounge favorites redefined by remixed tropical rhythms, the magic of the women’s voices, astounding solos, and inventive arrangements.

Duende

Broward County closed the celebrations of its centennial with DUENDE, a three-day-long event with parties and performances in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach.
Fort Lauderdale hosted the “Party of the Century” on Oct. 3 at the Riverwalk and Brazilian Voices was proud to perform at DUENDE: the Grand Finale of the Broward 100 Celebration. DUENDE was a spectacular celebration of Arts and diversity displaying an impressive collaborating among artists and featuring live music of all sorts, flamenco dance, capoeira, taiko drums and steel drum bands among others.

Brazilian Voices delivered a special performance at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 18th, 2015 at 8:00 PM.

Beatriz Malnic and Loren Oliveira, Brazilian Voices Artistic Directors chose works that highlighted the group’s strengths; with powerful interpretations, rich harmonies and a passionate approach. There was fluidity and warmth on their singing throughout the program, including a joyfull “Roda de Samba” (Samba Circle) next to the audience.

Serene, thoughtful renditions of Jobim’s “Wave,” and “Dindi” filled out an evening that reinforced the conviction that some popular music is so beautiful and eloquent that it never grows old. In addition, the group performed American standards incorporating some elements from Bossa Nova with softness and soothing interpretation.

Beatriz fashioned piano parts whose chords nodded toward Impressionism while demonstrating the complexity of the songs’ original harmonic vocal arrangements, presented through the voices of Brazilian Voices singers and special guests sharing the grand piano, such as: George Tandy and George Tandy Jr., Adriana Mezzadri, Jeff Deen, Jorge Sosa and Band.

This was another sold out performance at the Amaturo theatre, followed by a classy and delightful afterparty at the new Huizenga Pavillion.

May 10, 2014 – Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale

Once again Brazilian Voices energized the Amaturo Theater at Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts on the eve of Mother’s day with another delightful concert. Rhythm was charged with music, dance, and humor.
This sold out concert took place a few days after Brazilian Voices received its 10th International Press Award for Best Brazilian Musical Group in the United States.
Choreographer, actor, and dancer Pablo Malco opened the show with a captivating solo performance, inviting the audience to reflect upon rhythm. Although the selected repertoire had a rich mix of different Afro-Brazilian music, “the concert was truly inspired by the broad concept of rhythm, from biological frequencies such as heartbeat and breathing patterns, to music, dance, rhythms of nature and urban life, and beyond the definition of musical genres and beats”, according to Sue Scaglione, the concert’s artistic director.
Thirty singers from the all-female vocal group, some performing for their first time, were joined by the vibrant band, conducted by Maestro Jorge L. Sosa, along with the percussionists from Samba RJ.
The concert featured performances by Fábio Barros and dancers from Cia do Axé, who delivered impeccable choreographies, including an energetic Maracatú. Capoeira performers led by Professor Pica-Pau and Berimbau players from the LuandAngola center were also among the guest artists.
This energy-packed, one-of-a-kind concert captivated the audience with exhilarating Brazilian music by Gilberto Gil, Djavan, Daniela Mercury, Maria Gandú, Lenine, Milton Nascimento, Marisa Monte, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, among others. The program had a unique rendition of Alicia Key’s hit of Girl on Fire complemented by a solo dance performance by Andréa Araújo that educed a standing ovation.

Another show was brought to life by a remarkably versatile group of women performing and expressing the Joy of Brazil. The show took the audience through energetic rhythms of Brazilian Bossa Nova, Samba, Pop and Forro with a combination of beats of “batucada.” These voices, along with a talented band, performed original arrangements interpreting Marisa Monte, Djavan, Luiz Gonzaga, Jorge Benjor, Vinicius de Moraes and many others.

With its original music arrangements, the group explored Brazilian and American pop music, from Bossa Nova to Samba in an elegant, relaxing and upbeat atmosphere. This was a one-time, sold-out concert completely embraced by a vibrant audience that sang along and cheered through every song. A true masterpiece!

The performance was highlighted with the participation of members of South Florida Taiko Dojo ensemble, flamenco dancers from Angeles Gitanos, and the special appearance of the renowned composer, arranger, and award winning pianist Antonio Adolfo. These voices along with a talented band performed original arrangements interpreting Djavan, Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Marisa Monte and Caetano Veloso among others.

The nine-time Brazilian International Press Award winner brought a mix of unique, tender, modern-contemporary, passionate, and poetic performance with powerful Brazilian rhythms and melodies. This concert was under the artistic direction of Sue Scaglione.
